Jacob began his professional career with the Singapore Economic Development Board as a projects officer, followed by operational and managerial roles in industry, including overseas assignments. He later returned to Singapore to pursue an academic career.
In the 1980s, he joined the newly established Nanyang Technological University (NTU), where he taught for approximately 30 years. During this time, he was involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, curriculum development, and mentoring students across multiple cohorts before retiring from full-time university service.
